Abstract

The US Justice Department has recommended reclassifying marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III, a decision that could benefit the legal marijuana industry by providing tax breaks. This reclassification would make it easier for patients and researchers to access cannabis for medical purposes without decriminalizing it. However, the production, distribution, and possession of marijuana for recreational use would still be illegal under federal law. The move comes almost 30 years after California legalized medical marijuana, and more than half of the US population now has access to marijuana under state laws. [Extracted from the article]
