Abstract

The article focuses on two recent legal developments involving sports-related municipal liability and international sports arbitration. First, it examines a federal court decision in Denver allowing a § 1983 claim against the City and County of Denver for alleged inadequate police training in crowd management and use-of-force tactics during the 2023 Denver Nuggets NBA Championship celebration, emphasizing the application of the Monell standard for municipal liability. Second, it reports that the Swiss Federal Supreme Court vacated a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling that had stripped U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles of her 2024 Olympic bronze medal due to procedural deficiencies and newly discovered video evidence, ordering a rehearing of the arbitration. Both cases highlight evolving legal scrutiny of crowd-control practices and arbitration fairness in high-profile sports contexts. Extracted from the article
