Abstract

The article focuses on recent political and economic developments in several African countries. In Botswana, rising government debt is approaching the statutory limit of 40% of GDP, prompting President Duma Boko's administration to initiate a $4.5 million forensic audit of public spending to address corruption linked to the previous government. In Togo, President Faure Gnassingbé is circumventing presidential term limits by transitioning to an executive prime minister role with consolidated power, a move met with domestic opposition but little regional or international criticism. South Africa faces internal political tensions over Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's revised budget, particularly regarding proposed value-added tax increases opposed by coalition partners. Additionally, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is withdrawing its ill-equipped military mission from eastern Congo-Kinshasa after heavy losses, while regional efforts continue to address security challenges in the Sahel amid strained relations between civilian governments and military juntas within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
