Abstract

The article focuses on the severe impact of U.S. sanctions and a de facto oil blockade on Cuba’s scientific and medical sectors, particularly highlighting the struggles of the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) and other biotech institutions. Prolonged power outages and supply shortages have forced the suspension of most clinical trials and strained hospitals, risking patient care and public health. Despite these challenges, Cuban scientists continue to innovate, maintaining vaccine production and advancing clinical research, including trials for Alzheimer’s and cancer treatments. The blockade has also disrupted international collaborations and export routes, threatening the sustainability of Cuba’s biotech industry and its contributions to global health.
