Abstract
This article focuses on the 1955 film *The Night of the Hunter*, directed by Charles Laughton and starring Robert Mitchum as the sinister preacher Harry Powell. Despite its initial commercial failure, the film has gained cult status for its unique blend of Gothic horror, fairy tale elements, and German Expressionist cinematography by Stanley Cortez. Adapted from Davis Grubb’s novel by James Agee and Laughton, the story centers on Powell’s pursuit of stolen money hidden by a condemned man’s children during the Great Depression. The article highlights Mitchum’s compelling performance, the film’s stylistic innovations, and its complex reception amid 1950s American cultural conservatism, while noting the recent 4K UHD restoration by Kino Lorber that enhances its visual impact.
