Abstract

This study examines racial profiling in traffic stop citations involving young Hispanic male (YHM), young Black male (YBM), and young White male (YWM) drivers of luxury brand cars in majority white and majority Hispanic cities. Using Illinois traffic stop data (2016–18) and the 2016 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS), the study applies the social conditioning model and illusory correlation to explain police decision-making. Findings indicate racial profiling occurs only for YHM drivers stopped in majority white cities during safety or investigatory stops that result in citations. No evidence of racial profiling was found for YBM drivers in majority white cities or for YBM and YWM drivers in majority Hispanic cities.
