Abstract
This article examines the impact of California's AB 392, known as the California Act to Save Lives, which revised the legal standard for police use of deadly force to only when necessary to defend human life. Despite the law’s intent to reduce officer-involved shootings, analyses using interrupted time series and synthetic control methods found no evidence that AB 392 decreased the incidence of fatal police force in California. The article suggests that efforts to reduce deadly force should combine legislative changes with evidence-based practices and a multi-faceted approach involving policymakers, practitioners, and researchers.
