Abstract
This article focuses on Mouna Maroun, an Israeli Arab neuroscientist and rector of the University of Haifa (UHaifa), who leads the institution amid ongoing regional conflicts and societal tensions. Maroun, a member of Israel’s Arab minority and the Maronite Christian community, has broken multiple barriers in academia and advocates for increasing Arab representation in science to promote coexistence. Her tenure has been marked by challenges including campus divisions during the Israel-Hamas war, disputes over free speech, and efforts to support Arab students facing educational and social obstacles. Despite these difficulties, Maroun remains committed to fostering collaboration between Jewish and Arab communities through education and scientific research as a means to address broader societal fractures.
