Abstract

The article reviews Jeff Strickland's *All for Liberty: The Charleston Workhouse Slave Rebellion of 1849*, which centers on the largely overlooked slave rebellion led by Nicholas Kelly at the Charleston workhouse in South Carolina. Strickland reconstructs this event from scattered historical records, highlighting how white South Carolinians suppressed its memory through euphemistic language and limited media coverage to control the narrative and minimize Black resistance. The book situates the rebellion within broader patterns of slave insurrections and their impact on South Carolina's social control and political climate leading up to secession. While acknowledging the rebellion's opportunistic nature and limited planning, Strickland argues it remains a significant, though neglected, episode in the history of enslaved people's resistance.
