Abstract
This letter comments on a 2023 systematic review by Hu et al. that demonstrated the benefits of xanthophyll-rich foods and supplements for eye health. It highlights concerns about pesticide residues in these foods, noting that exposure to chemical pesticides—through direct contact or dietary intake—can cause both acute and chronic ocular damage, including irritation, vision blurring, and structural eye changes. The authors advocate for promoting organic food consumption to reduce pesticide exposure and recommend public education on healthy eating practices, including washing or peeling produce to limit pesticide intake. They emphasize the need for further clinical research on the impact of pesticides on visual health.
