Abstract

The article focuses on recent militant attacks and human rights concerns in Burkina Faso amid ongoing conflict involving jihadist groups. It reports multiple deadly attacks attributed to the Katiba Macina unit allied with al-Qaeda's Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and clashes with the Islamic State (IS) Sahel province branch, resulting in significant civilian and military casualties across several regions. The Burkinabe armed forces have initiated an investigation following a widely circulated video allegedly showing soldiers mutilating a body, amid longstanding accusations by rights groups of extrajudicial killings by the military, which the army denies. Since 2015, violence linked to al-Qaeda and IS-affiliated groups has caused over 26,000 deaths and displaced more than two million people within Burkina Faso.
