Abstract

This article focuses on analyzing fatal officer-involved shootings (OIS) in the USA using data from the Police Data Initiative (PDI) collected from eight large municipal police agencies between 2015 and 2022. It employs logistic regression to identify predictors of lethality in OIS incidents, finding that the number of officers involved, the officer's years of experience, and the civilian's age significantly influence whether an OIS is fatal. The study highlights the need for evidence-based strategies to prevent fatal OIS, improve critical incident responses, and enhance the availability of OIS data. Future research directions are also discussed to address gaps in understanding these incidents.
