Abstract
Chief Justice John Roberts has declined a request from Democratic senators to meet and discuss ethics controversies surrounding the US Supreme Court. The request was made in light of recent revelations that flags associated with right-wing causes were flown at Justice Samuel Alito's residences. Roberts also refused to question Alito's decision to participate in pending cases involving Donald Trump and the January 6 Capitol riot. Roberts cited separation of powers and judicial independence as reasons for rejecting the meeting, stating that it is rare for a sitting chief justice to meet with legislators. The court is currently considering whether Trump is immune from criminal charges related to the 2020 election and is also reviewing an appeal by a man charged in connection with the Capitol assault.
