Abstract

The article informs on the 60th anniversary of the landmark decision in the U.S. Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright, which established the right to legal counsel for indigent defendants in felony cases. It mentions the American Bar Association collaborated with the National Legal Aid & Defender Association to develop alternative models for indigent representation and provided technical assistance in establishing public defenders' offices nationwide.
