Abstract
The article discusses the theme of educational equality within Mexican American and Chicano (a/x/e) historiography, particularly through James B. Barrera's work, "We Want Better Education!" which focuses on the Chicano student movement in South Texas during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Barrera presents four case studies from San Antonio, Edcouch-Elsa, Kingsville, and Crystal City, arguing that these mobilizations are significant to the broader Chicano Movement and deserve recognition alongside major Civil Rights protests. The work highlights the local activism of Chicana/o youth and their responses to systemic inequalities in education, while also detailing the contributions of both well-known and local activists. Despite some narrative disruptions, the book is noted for its accessible style, making it suitable for students at various academic levels. [Extracted from the article]
