Abstract

The article examines the impact of neighborhood digital platforms, such as Nextdoor and 311 applications, on urban life, particularly in the context of gentrification and community dynamics. It highlights how these platforms can foster both community solidarity and exclusionary behaviors, particularly among wealthier residents who perceive urban disorder linked to working-class, predominantly Black and Brown populations. The study, conducted through ethnographic methods in Oakland's Fruitvale District, reveals that these platforms enable residents to connect disparate incidents into a narrative of organized crime, thereby mobilizing resources and policing efforts that disproportionately affect marginalized groups. Ultimately, the findings suggest that neighborhood digital platforms play a significant role in shaping perceptions of urban disorder and influencing public policy in contested urban spaces.
