Abstract
Businesses in the US are facing a severe labor shortage and are desperate to hire more workers, but there is little support in Congress for making it easier for migrants to work. While the influx of migrants during the pandemic may have seemed like a potential solution, the government bureaucracy has struggled to process work permits for newcomers. Politicians in Washington are more concerned about anti-immigrant sentiment among voters, which has hindered efforts to address the worker shortage through immigration reform. Industry groups are calling for changes to the quota system for employment-based visas and measures to regularize undocumented workers. However, the political climate makes it difficult to find a bipartisan solution, leaving businesses in a difficult position. [Extracted from the article]
