Abstract

This systematized review examines the interactions of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) within the juvenile justice system, identifying gaps in research and highlighting challenges faced by this population. Analyzing 14 peer-reviewed studies from 2013 to 2023, the review addresses prevalence, offense types, recidivism, comorbidities, competency to stand trial, and service provision. Findings indicate variability in offense severity and recidivism rates among subgroups of youth with I/DD, significant comorbid mental health conditions, and frequent determinations of incompetency to stand trial, especially among younger youth with intellectual disabilities. The review underscores the importance of early identification, interagency collaboration, and tailored vocational rehabilitation services to improve educational, legal, and employment outcomes, while calling for more longitudinal research to better understand long-term effects and inform policy and practice.
