Abstract

The US Supreme Court has allowed West Point to continue using race as a factor in its admissions process, rejecting a request to halt the academy's affirmative action efforts. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that civilian universities cannot consider race in admissions for the sake of campus diversity, but left open the issue of admissions at service academies. The Biden administration argues that race-conscious admissions at service academies are necessary for national security and to ensure a diverse officer corps. Students for Fair Admissions, a group representing two White applicants to West Point, sued over the admissions program, but a federal trial judge and an appeals court refused to halt the policy.
