Abstract
This article examines Canadian victims’ experiences reporting identity theft to private and public institutions, based on interviews with 20 victims in Ontario. While some victims reported prompt and helpful responses—particularly when financial institutions flagged suspicious transactions—many encountered frustration due to unclear processes, repeated referrals between departments, unmet timelines, and a lack of closure or information about how their identity was compromised. Victims’ experiences varied widely even in similar cases, highlighting inconsistencies in institutional responses and raising concerns about equitable victim assistance. The findings suggest a need for clearer policies, improved communication, and coordinated support mechanisms to better assist identity theft victims in Canada.
