Abstract
This article traces a de facto debate between scholars of the eighteenth century and those of the twentieth century regarding the period of emergence of foreplay. Finding much to be appreciated in both scholarly accounts, this article instead traces the history of foreplay in England as a term, concept, representation, and practice from the mid-seventeenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. In so doing, the article understands foreplay as a temporal and ideological regime that organizes and attributes value to a vast of array of sexual practices. Reading across "obscene" literary texts, diaries, marriage manuals, sexological literature, newspaper accounts, and a range of other cultural materials, this article endeavors to explain how the sexual body became genitally organized.
