Abstract

Liberians are going to the polls to choose between President George Weah and ex-vice president Joseph Boakai as their next leader. This runoff vote is taking place because none of the 20 contenders in the previous election were able to secure the necessary majority. Weah, a former football star, narrowly won the first ballot with 43.8% of the votes, but his support has been eroded by rising prices and corruption scandals. Liberia ranks poorly on Transparency International's corruption perceptions index, and Weah has accepted the resignations of officials involved in bribery and misuse of public funds.
