Abstract

This Education Supplement for Genocide Awareness Month, produced by the International Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (a division of the Zoryan Institute) and published by Genocide Studies International, focuses on enhancing understanding and prevention of genocide through scholarly discussion and classroom resources. It includes summaries of three key articles: David Scheffer's theoretical argument for adopting the term "atrocity crimes" to enable swifter international responses to mass violence; Katherine Goldsmith's legal analysis advocating a knowledge-based standard of intent over the stricter dolus specialis standard in the Genocide Convention to improve prevention and prosecution; and Adrian Gallagher's conceptual exploration of three international relations worldviews—realism, rationalism, and revolutionism—that shape differing approaches to genocide prevention. The supplement aims to bridge academic scholarship and public education, providing adaptable materials for teachers and students to engage critically with the complexities of genocide, its legal definitions, and the challenges of international cooperation in prevention efforts.
