Abstract

This article focuses on a post-booking diversion program for mentally disordered (MD) suspects implemented in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which involved collaboration between the prosecutor's office and emergency psychiatric services to improve decisions on prosecution versus diversion to mental health care. Over 40 months, data showed that 38.9% of the cohort had psychotic disorders, with many experiencing social vulnerability and frequent dismissal of charges alongside involuntary hospitalization. The program successfully diverted most suspects with psychotic disorders from the justice system to appropriate mental health services. The research highlights the need for socio-economically oriented programs tailored to mentally disordered suspects. [Extracted from the article]
