Kepler's Second Law Using Integration by Weighing.

Abstract
The article focuses on an educational activity designed to help students explore Kepler's second law, also known as the law of equal areas, using minimal mathematics and equipment. By plotting Mars's orbit on scaled polar graph paper and employing a technique called integration by weighing—cutting out sectors of the orbit from cardstock and comparing their masses—students can empirically verify that equal time intervals correspond to equal areas swept by the planet. The activity is extended to a more eccentric orbit, such as Halley's Comet, to illustrate the law's applicability regardless of orbital shape. This hands-on approach aims to develop students' conceptual understanding of planetary motion without requiring advanced mathematical skills.
