Abstract

The authors, one white and one Black, met at a 2018 meeting of the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California and began a collaborative mission to identify a common ancestor in Nelson and Fluvanna Counties of Central Virginia. We bookend our work with the estimated 1815 birth of ancestor Sophia Taliaferro and the 1862 death of her enslaver William Cabell Massie. We describe our research methods with a focus on identification of collateral family and analysis of our DNA shared matches to answer our question. Within a multifamily lattice of connections coursing through three generations of slavery, we discovered eight paths of familial ties, primarily through collateral family lines. Our paper discusses the context, findings, meaning, and value of our story for genealogical research and education on the shared history of America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
