Abstract

In "Tyrants of Industry: Can the Right Tame Capitalism?" by Sohrab Ahmari, the author examines the impact of American capitalism on democracy and individual freedom. Ahmari argues that capitalism has resulted in significant power imbalances, allowing corporations to exert control over workers and limit choice and freedom. He highlights issues such as employment contracts favoring employers, biased arbitration courts, and the weakening of labor unions. The article also discusses the rollback of government regulations and services, leading to a decline in quality of life for many citizens. Ahmari suggests that a new relationship between government and capitalism is needed to address these concerns and protect democracy and individual liberty. The concept of social democracy is explored as a potential solution, emphasizing the use of political power to mitigate the negative effects of capitalism while still recognizing its benefits. Other political traditions, such as right-wing populism and Christian democracy, are also considered as potential allies in creating a new economic order. The author argues that addressing threats to American democracy requires not only curbing corporate power but also addressing illiberal tendencies within political parties, particularly the Republican Party.
