Abstract

This article focuses on a descriptive analysis of deaths that occurred in the presence of law enforcement in Johnson County, Iowa, from 2011 to 2020, using definitions from the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME). Among 165 such deaths investigated by the Johnson County Medical Examiner (JCME), 69.1% were due to known diseases, while 30.9% were sudden, unexpected, or trauma-related, with suicide being the leading manner of death in trauma cases. The study highlights the role of medical examiners and coroners in providing comprehensive, case-specific data on these deaths, emphasizing the need for standardized reporting mechanisms to improve public health surveillance and data completeness regarding deaths involving law enforcement presence.
