Abstract
The article reviews *Black Witness: The Power of Indigenous Media* (2024) by Amy McQuire, a Darumbal and South Sea Islander journalist and academic, which critiques mainstream media's treatment of Indigenous issues and challenges conventional journalistic norms like objectivity. McQuire argues that Indigenous journalism is inherently activist, serving First Nations communities by reclaiming representation often overshadowed by dominant "White witnesses" who control mainstream narratives. The book is divided into two parts: the first analyzes mainstream media's framing of Indigenous stories, while the second centers Indigenous perspectives and experiences, including case studies such as the wrongful conviction of Goreng Goreng man Kevin Henry. McQuire highlights systemic violence against Indigenous people and calls for greater recognition of Indigenous voices in media, contrasting this with the limited and conditional coverage Indigenous issues receive in mainstream outlets.
