Abstract
In 1981, a murder case in East Germany involving the death of seven-year-old Lars Bense led to a unique investigation where police collected handwriting samples from residents to solve the crime. The murder highlighted the ideological challenge of crime in a socialist state that claimed to have eradicated criminality. Despite the regime's efforts to underreport crime and blame Western influences, the investigation ultimately led to the arrest of the perpetrator, shedding light on the complexities of crime and politics in East Germany.
