Abstract

The article focuses on the historical achievements of individuals who have broken the sound barrier, highlighting the significance of this milestone in aviation and skydiving. In 1947, American pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier in a jet, reaching Mach 1.06. Sixty-five years later, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner made history by free-falling at Mach 1.24 without a vehicle. The article explains the concept of the sound barrier, the mechanics of sound waves, and the implications of sonic booms, noting ongoing efforts to mitigate noise from supersonic aircraft in populated areas.
