Abstract
The article examines 14 cases of women convicted of intimate partner homicide (IPH) following experiences of domestic abuse, aiming to explore how prior abuse influences the type of homicide committed. Using content analysis and Smallest Space Analysis, the study identified three thematic clusters—self-defence, other abuse, and unintended—each associated with distinct patterns of abuse history, mental health, and homicide methods. Findings suggest differences between women who kill in immediate self-defence and those who kill after prolonged abuse, highlighting the complexity of female-perpetrated IPH and the need for gender-specific risk assessments and interventions. The study calls for further research with larger samples to refine typologies and improve understanding of predictive factors in female IPH cases.
