Abstract
This study investigates the relationships among reactions to the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court ruling (which overturned Roe v. Wade), psychological distress, collective action involvement, and abortion history among cisgender women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB). Findings from 894 participants indicate that adverse reactions to the ruling are positively associated with psychological distress, with this association intensified by higher involvement in reproductive justice collective action but attenuated by involvement in antiabortion collective action. While reproductive justice collective action correlates positively with distress regardless of abortion history, involvement in antiabortion collective action is linked to greater distress only among those who have had an abortion. The study highlights the importance for mental health providers to consider clients' abortion-related beliefs, histories, and activism when addressing psychological well-being in the context of changing abortion laws.
