Abstract

The article focuses on Zimbabwe's decision to return foreign-owned farms seized during a violent land redistribution over 25 years ago and to pay $146 million in compensation to affected property owners from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the former Yugoslavia. Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka reported that 67 such properties are being transferred, alongside the return of 840 farms owned by Black farmers and about 400 owned by White farmers. The land seizures began in 2000 under then-President Robert Mugabe, who encouraged the takeover of White-owned farms to address colonial-era injustices, resulting in violence and displacement. Zimbabwe had previously agreed in 2020 to pay $3.5 billion to White farmers as part of efforts to reenter global capital markets, but revised compensation terms involving dollar bonds were rejected by some farmers.
