Abstract
Shippers, such as Hapag-Lloyd AG and Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, are urging the International Maritime Organization to avoid supporting crop-based biofuels in efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry. Concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of biofuels, particularly palm and soy, which can be more harmful to the climate than traditional fuels when deforestation and land use are considered. The push against biofuels comes as the IMO aims for a zero-carbon-emissions target for the industry by 2050, with delegates meeting in London to discuss regulatory measures to reduce the sector's carbon footprint.
