Abstract
Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. CEO Lourenco Goncalves revealed that he had discussions with the US government to ensure that his bid to acquire United States Steel Corp. would not face antitrust issues. However, US Steel ultimately chose to accept a $14.1 billion all-cash offer from Nippon Steel Corp. instead. These comments come amid uncertainty about whether Nippon Steel will be able to complete the deal, following President Joe Biden's statement that US Steel should remain under American ownership.
