Abstract
The article focuses on the corporate manslaughter case arising from the 2017 death of Abdullah Hayayei, a prominent United Arab Emirates Paralympian, who was fatally injured when a metal discus cage fell on him during training at the World Para Athletics Championships in London. UK Athletics Ltd (UKA) and Keith Davies, former Head of Sport at UKA, were charged with corporate manslaughter and health and safety offenses due to gross negligence in providing and supervising unsafe athletics equipment, specifically a discus cage missing its stabilizing base. In February 2026, UKA pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter, and Davies pleaded guilty to health and safety violations, with sentencing pending. The case highlights the importance of rigorous safety management in sports organizations and the legal accountability under the UK’s Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
