Abstract

This article focuses on Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman's opposition to the resentencing of Lyle and Erik Menendez, convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents. Hochman cites the brothers' repeated dishonesty and failure to fully accept responsibility for the killings as reasons against making them immediately eligible for parole, contrasting his stance with that of his predecessor who supported resentencing. The Menendez brothers have pursued resentencing and clemency following new evidence of their father's sexual abuse, with backing from most of their extended family, who dispute Hochman's characterization of their accountability. A court-ordered resentencing hearing is scheduled, while Governor Gavin Newsom has directed a parole board review and proposed reforms to parole procedures.
