Abstract

This article focuses on recent research from the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland, examining the death of the Greek philosopher Socrates as a significant influence on contemporary discussions about suicide. The study employs a psychobiographical, interpretive-descriptive approach to analyze Socrates' motivations within the ancient Greek cultural context of honour and shame, linking these concepts to the broader, universal idea of social status. It suggests that Socrates' choice of death to preserve honour offers an alternative perspective on suicide, challenging its medicalization and pathologization. The research advocates for reconsidering suicide prevention programs and legal frameworks in light of these insights. [Extracted from the article]
