Abstract

This article examines the role of salon professionals in Indiana as frontline responders to intimate partner violence (IPV) and sex trafficking, highlighting their frequent encounters with victims and their potential to intervene effectively. Based on survey responses from 334 licensed salon professionals, the study found that over 90% had suspected or directly interacted with victims of IPV or sex trafficking, often through client disclosures or visible signs of abuse. Participants expressed strong support for mandatory, comprehensive training programs focused on recognizing violence indicators, effective communication, safety protocols, and collaboration with law enforcement and community organizations. The findings underscore the importance of integrating tailored intervention training into salon professionals' licensing and continuing education to enhance victim support and community-based violence prevention efforts.
