Abstract

The article focuses on the Irish Free State’s admission to the League of Nations in September 1923, marking its formal entry into the international community. Led by Minister for External Affairs Desmond FitzGerald and President of the Executive Council W. T. Cosgrave, the Irish delegation participated in the League’s ceremony in Geneva, following a 1919 vote by the first Dáil to seek membership. The League of Nations, established after World War I to promote peace through collective security and dispute resolution, provided Ireland with expanded diplomatic engagement beyond its existing relations in Western Europe and North America. Cosgrave’s address emphasized Ireland’s commitment to liberty and dignity within the harmonious society of nations.
