Abstract

The article reports on the recent resurgence of piracy off the Somali coast, with Somali pirates releasing a Bangladeshi-flagged cargo ship after allegedly receiving a $5 million ransom. The report highlights that this is the first group of Somali pirates to receive a ransom since 2012. Somali officials did not comment on the incident. The European Union (EU) issued a warning against paying ransoms to Somali pirates, citing concerns that it could fuel further hijackings in the region. The article emphasizes the need for international cooperation to address the root causes of piracy, including poverty and instability in Somalia. Additionally, security forces in Jubbaland and Puntland regional states arrested suspected pirates and seized illegal weapons in separate operations. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa authorized the extension of maritime patrols in the Mozambique Channel to combat piracy and other maritime crimes. [Extracted from the article]
