Abstract
An essay is presented which explores political issues surrounding the 1862 midterm elections in the U.S. Topics discussed include the appointment of members of the 38th U.S. Congress under the administration of then U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, the outcome of the elections for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and governorships in New York and New Jersey, and the factors which may have contributed to decline in Republican voter turnout.
