Abstract

The article focuses on the recent controversy surrounding the leadership of the Library of Congress (LoC) following the abrupt dismissal of Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who was serving a 10-year term ending in 2026. Robert R. Newlen was appointed acting Librarian according to LoC succession rules but was soon challenged by the Trump administration's attempt to install Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in the role, leading to a standoff and staff uncertainty. Additionally, the director of the U.S. Copyright Office, Shira Perlmutter, was also fired, and unauthorized attempts by individuals claiming Trump administration appointments to access the Copyright Office were thwarted. Congressional Democrats have called for an investigation into potential improper communications and unauthorized data transfers between the LoC and the executive branch, emphasizing concerns about preserving the Library's independence and its critical research role for Congress. The situation remains unresolved and is causing operational disruptions within the institution.
