Subjective health literacy skills among Greek secondary school students: results from a national-wide survey.

Abstract

This article focuses on assessing the health literacy levels of Greek secondary school students and identifying factors influencing these skills. Using HeLiASeSS, a validated instrument for measuring health literacy among Greek adolescents, the study surveyed a representative sample of 2,749 students in grades 7, 9, and 10. Findings indicate that most students exhibit low to moderate health literacy, with higher levels associated with greater motivation to learn about health, positive social support, absence of learning difficulties, academic achievement, and preference for biology and computer science. The study underscores the need for the Greek educational system to integrate health literacy development into curricula, emphasizing that health literacy is a complex sociocultural process influenced by individual, familial, and environmental factors.
