Physical learning spaces in Kenyan academic libraries.

Abstract
This article examines the suitability of physical learning spaces in academic libraries at selected Kenyan universities for twenty-first century student learning. Through qualitative interviews with librarians and students, alongside space observations, the study finds that these libraries predominantly maintain traditional, collection-centered designs that emphasize quiet, individual study and offer limited support for collaborative, social, and technology-rich learning activities. While some newer libraries show signs of evolving toward more diverse and inclusive learning environments, overall, Kenyan academic libraries lack sufficient group work spaces, modern technology infrastructure, and social areas that align with contemporary pedagogical approaches. The study recommends that Kenyan academic libraries repurpose their spaces by better understanding student needs, managing collections to free up learner space, and incorporating a variety of flexible, technology-enabled, and socially supportive areas to enhance relevance and student engagement.
