Abstract
This article focuses on Natalie King, a Humboldt County author known for her 1964 young adult novel *The Girl on the Bookmobile*, which realistically depicts library life and bookmobile service in rural northern California. Drawing on her own experiences in Eureka, King’s work highlights the role of libraries and explores themes such as career dedication, mental health, and racial equality. The story features the Eureka County Library and the historic Eureka City Library, once led by librarian Helen Murie. King and her family were active community members, and she published sixteen books, many with educational and locally inspired content.
