Abstract
The article discusses the importance of houses as sources for historical research, particularly in relation to material culture and family life. The author, Anne Schillig, focuses on the interrelationships between material culture and family in rural Switzerland from 1700 to 1900. She challenges the modernization narratives often associated with this period and examines the agency of houses in shaping human habitation. Schillig draws on extensive research on rural dwellings in Switzerland, including the work of the Swiss Bauernhausforschung and the Ballenberg open-air museum. The article emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary cooperation in studying complex research subjects and suggests that historians can benefit from incorporating insights from ethnographic and cultural anthropological research.
