Assessment of information literacy, attitude towards research and research competence of library and information science undergraduates in Nigerian universities.

Abstract

The article focuses on assessing the information literacy (IL), attitude towards research, and research competence of Library and Information Science (LIS) undergraduates in six universities in South-West Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design with questionnaires and focus group discussions, the study found that these undergraduates generally exhibit poor IL skills, a mixed attitude towards research, but an acceptable level of research competence. A significant positive relationship was identified between IL and research competence, suggesting that improved IL skills could enhance research capabilities. The study recommends early and practical IL training, diversified teaching methods for research methodologies, and the integration of mobile and electronic learning tools to strengthen LIS students' research potential.
