Comparing DRD2 Promoter Methylation Between Blood and Brain in Alcohol Dependence.

Abstract

This article focuses on the investigation of epigenetic alterations in the dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) gene promoter in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) using post-mortem brain tissue samples. The study found significant hypomethylation at specific cytosine-phosphatidyl-guanine (CpG) sites in the nucleus accumbens and hippocampus of AUD patients compared to controls, suggesting increased DRD2 transcription and altered reward processing in these brain regions. While methylation patterns were comparable across different brain regions, the study indicates that peripheral blood methylation does not reliably reflect DRD2 promoter methylation in the brain. These findings contribute to understanding the epigenetic regulation of DRD2 in AUD but highlight the need for further research to clarify the functional implications and potential for biomarker development.
